Nassau: Correction officers' union backs Suozzi
Nassau’s Sheriff’s Correction Officers Benevolent Association became the first county labor union to endorse a candidate in the county executive race, backing Democrat Thomas Suozzi.
“Suozzi has a vision for the county and for how to get us out of this fiscal mess,” said COBA president John Jaronczyk.
COBA did not endorse a candidate in 2009, when GOP County Executive Edward Mangano narrowly defeated Suozzi.
“These brave men and women put their lives at risk daily,” Suozzi said. “I look forward to working alongside Nassau COBA to solve the fiscal problems caused by the Mangano administration.”
The union, Jaronczyk said, could not support Mangano after he laid off 400 county employees in 2011 and tried, unsuccessfully, to pass a bill last year allowing him to alter closed collective bargaining agreements.
