Nassau fee to Mondello firm draws fire from top Dem

The Republican-controlled Rules Committee of the Nassau County legislature is expected on Monday to approve a $275,000 increase to a contract for the law firm where Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello is counsel. That will hike the total fee paid to Berkman, Henoch, Peterson, Peddy & Fenchel to $475,000 for defending the county in a lawsuit accusing police of using excessive force.

“It’s outrageous,” Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs said. “Every taxpayer ought to be disgusted that county Republicans are doing a contract to give county taxpayer money to the Republican chairman’s law firm.”

County Attorney John Ciampoli responded that the firm won the case, saving Nassau more than $20 million in potential damages. “I think his attacks are baseless, unfounded and quite frankly offensive because the bottom line here is that we’re achieveing success for the taxpayers of this county,” Ciampoli said.
