Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano officially accepted the Republican nomination for a second term in office at the GOP convention Wednesday night, highlighting his record on taxes and job creation.

“We have the lowest unemployment in the region and the highest private sector job growth,” Mangano told a standing-room-only crowd at the Wisdom Lane School in Levittown, which gave the first-term county executive a standing ovation. “Our policies are working.”

Mangano also took a series of shots at Democrats, including his predecessor — and potential opponent in November Thomas Suozzi. Mangano highlighted his 2010 repeal of Suozzi’s home energy tax while noting that his administration has held the line on property taxes for three consecutive years.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, who introduced the county executive, said: “Mangano cleaned up the mess left by his predecessor and did not reach into the pockets of already burdened taxpayers.”

Suozzi, who served as county executive from 2001-2009, will compete in a Democratic primary for county executive against East Hills businessman Adam Haber.
