Nassau's Walker quashes talk of leadership challenge
Quashing increasing speculation among political insiders, Nassau’s Chief Deputy County Executive Rob Walker Wednesday said he has no plans to challenge the political leadership of Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello.
Rumors had circulated that Walker, the Hicksville West Republican leader, had his eye on the party’s top job after his Hicksville Republican Committee reported in July that it had raised $250,000 in contributions since January — more than ten times the amount usually raised by local political clubs.
Speculation was fueled again this week when invitations arrived in the mail for the Hicksville Republican Club annual golf outing, which is also sponsored by Friends of County Legislator Rose Walker, Rob Walker’s mother, who also lives in Hicksville.
The outing includes two golf courses – the Bethpage Blue and Red – when most local committees are lucky to fill just one course at their outings. Tickets are $200 per golfer but sponsorships run as high as $2,500. Included were $20 raffle tickets payable to the Hicksville Republican Committee, with winners receiving two tickets to attend a Giants Football home game of choice, with luxury suite seating at MetLife Stadium, VIP parking. food and drink.
A former state assemblyman, Walker said the outing was not unusual. “I have done it every year...for 20 years.”
Asked if he was trying to raise money to challenge Mondello, Walker responded, “Absolutely not.”
“The chairman has done an outstanding job and I support him 100 percent,” Walker said.
