Senate co-leader Jeff Klein under pressure from his left
Senate co-leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) has been under pressure from his left to achieve at least one high-profile agenda item this year: public financing of political campaigns, an abortion-rights measure, a tax to fund prekindergarten or college-tuition eligibility for people in the country illegally who came here as children, among others.
None of those were included in a state budget proposal the Senate adopted last week.
That doesn’t mean the issues are dead. But Klein, to succeed, would have to persuade his power-sharing partner, Senate co-leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre), to allow a vote on one of the items. So far, the two are on opposite sides on all those issues.
