Sounds like Bellone-for-L.G. tease by chair at Suffolk Dem dinner
It sounded last week like Suffolk Democratic Chairman Richard Schaffer was indirectly touting County Executive Steve Bellone for the possible opening of lieutenant governor at the party’s $300 a head spring dinner, headlined by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
An effusive Schaffer, who only months ago was reportedly getting the silent treatment from the county executive, labeled Bellone as the “our Bruce Springsteen.” Schaffer recalled how hard Bellone worked, collecting 1,200 signatures on nominating petitions while still in high school. “He’s creative...and passionate what he believes in” said Schaffer.
Bellone, who introduced Cuomo, returned the bouquets, calling Schaffer a “dear friend, my political mentor and the greatest political chairman in New York State.”
When Cuomo rose to speak, he also joked about Bellone claims of knowing the “secrets of stripe bass fishing.” Despite Bellone’s know-how, Cuomo said when the two men went fishing together at Star Island in Montauk, he caught more fish than the county executive. Of course, then he added, “a state trooper was putting fish on my hook.”
Bellone later reiterated he has no interest in the job and is running for re-eleciton next year.
