State of NY voters: An impressive turnout overall despite Sandy

The first-glance numbers are rough. But it appears  that  voter turnout was impressive despite the battering effects of superstorm Sandy, and displacement of thousands of voters, the power problems, and the gas lines.

One early set of returns put the totals at close to 6.1 million votes thus far tallied in New York State, with 97 percent of precincts reporting their machine votes. The state has an official enrollment of 11,969,192. That would be 51 percent, and the certified vote, coming later, always comes out higher. Last presidential race it reached 59 percent in New York -- again, once everything was counted.
