As a result of superstorm Sandy, the state Board of Elections has extended the deadline for applying for absentee ballots to Friday, officials said.

Originally, absentee applications had to be postmarked by Oct. 30.

But in the aftermath of the storm, the elections board met in an emergency session late Wednesday and approved the extension, according to Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre).

Absentee ballots returned by mail must still be postmarked Monday, Nov. 5.

Voters can still go to their county board of elections and cast an absentee vote in person up to Monday.
