Suffolk village ass'n director: Don't trust Cuomo, LIPA plan
Paul Tonna, executive director of the Suffolk County Village Officials Association, wrote a memo to executive board members warning them in sharp terms to be wary of endorsing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s latest LIPA initiative.
What makes the memo surprising is that Tonna is also County Executive Steve Bellone’s hand-picked new chairman of the Suffolk Industrial Development Agency and Bellone has already come out in support of the Cuomo’s plan
A copy of the confidential internal memo states:
"There has been some pressure to support the governor's proposal regarding LIPA. I personally can't support his proposal. A lot of questions (that he doesn't have answers too) should be open to public scrutiny, asked & answered.
"The biggest question for me is where is the rate reductions coming from. My sense is its all BS. Insiders & reputable energy experts, even those that were pressures to publicly support the proposal, have privately articulated grave concerns about what the governor is, to quote one person: "shoving down our throats".
"I honestly believe he is just another governor, along with his father and Pataki, politically motivated to provide a short term "fix" that will ultimately result in even higher rates and less public accountability.
"I guess what I am saying is I DON'T TRUST THE MAN, THE PROPOSAL AND THE PROMISED RESULTS.
I don't believe he is a friend of the villages and suggest strongly that, unlike our colleagues in government, we don't "jump on the bandwagon".
"If you have questions and/or disagree please give me a call. I work for you and part of my job is to always "call it as I see it."
