This year, Democrats flock to Nassau Independence fete
Last year U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, who was running for re-election, was just about the only Democrat who attended the Nassau Independence Party fundraiser after Democratic County Chairman Jay Jacobs issued a ban on the event.
Last week, about two dozen county Democrats showed up for the Independence fundraiser at Oheka Castle, including Nassau legislators Kevan Abrahams, Judy Jacobs, Judy Bosworth, Wayne Wink, North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, former comptroller Howard Weitzman and State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.
“I guess they got some big races this year,” said Independence Party executive director Rick Bellando. “They came out and played nice.”
Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello also made an appearance as did Danny Donovan, Nassau Conservative party chairman.
Jay Jacobs. who said he had a scheduling conflict, did not attend. “I wasn’t boycotting,” he said. “I had said to Democrats if they chose to go they could go.”
