Top OT earners in NY double their salaries

Some of New York’s top overtime earners pulled in twice as much in OT pay in 2013 than their salaries, according to state records.

A corrections department lieutenant, for example,  received nearly $119,000 in overtime pay for his job which has a base pay of $90,243, according to the state comptroller’s office records obtained Friday under the state Freedom of Information Law.

On Long Island, a teaching and research worker at Stony Brook University Hospital who was paid a base salary of $58,468 was paid $98,711 in overtime, the records showed.

"Overtime is becoming a costly habit for New York State," said state Comptroller Thomas Napoli." After declines earlier in the decade, it is again on the rise and could break a record for 2013. State agencies responsible for managing this expense must ensure that work loads are appropriate and effective."
