UPDATED: Schumer. Gillibrand Furlough Most Staff

Aides to both New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand said they have furloughed most of their staffs in Washington and in New York because of the partial shutdown of the federal government.

Schumer spokesman Matt House sent an email with this statement: “A vast majority of Senator Schumer’s staff, both in Washington D.C. and across New York state have been furloughed as a result of the shutdown.”

Gillibrand spokeswoman Bethany Lesser sent this statement: "The majority of our staff has been furloughed."

Neither would be more specific.

Each of the senators employs about 65 staffers at a cost of about $3.4 million a year. That does not include other staff for Schumer's position as chairman of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, or for both senators positions on other Senate committees.

No one is more savvy about the news media than Sen. Chuck Schumer. So it's interesting Newsday editors got this email today for Schumer press aide Max Young on the first day of the partial shutdown of the federal government because Congress failed to pass a temporary funding bill:

"Hey folks - Just wanted to let you know that I’m going to be furloughed during the funding lapse.  while the funding lapse is in effect, I won't be able to take calls or respond to emails.  ...  If you could send this to your people, that would be great.

Thanks,

Max"

I haven't heard back from other lawmakers representing Long Island on furloughs in their offices.
