Female mayoral candidates aim for 'firsts' in NYC, LA

So far, Chicago is the largest American city to have had a female mayor -- Jane Byrne, who served between 1979 and 1983.

This year, Speaker Christine Quinn, announced for the top job today in New York City, but she is not the only woman in a big urban top-job contest this year.

In Los Angeles last week, the city controller, Wendy Greuel, landed second in a primary behind fellow Democrat and Councilman Eric Garcetti -- meaning those two will face each other in a runoff on May 21.

The incumbent mayor of LA, Antonio Villaraigosa, is departing this year due to term limits, as is NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
