A legislative resolution to name County Executive Steve Bellone’s wife, Tracey,  to an unpaid post as county parks trustee disappeared last week from the agenda of the party committee.

It turns out the administration quietly withdrew the resolution after county attorneys discovered that Tracey Bellone, the deputy park commissioner in Babylon Town, cannot legally serve because county code bars any state or local government appointees from becoming parks trustees.

Oddly, current Suffolk Parks Commissioner Gregory Dawson inadvertently violated the same code when he earlier served as a parks trustee at the same time he was Islip parks commissioner.

The withdrawal does not end Tracey Bellone’s prospects for becoming a parks trustee. A legislative bill is expected to be filed  that would change the county code. Then an appointment resolution could be refiled for the county executive's wife, who was deputy county parks commissioner during the administration of Steve Levy.*
