A ribbon-cutting for a new business in Island Park over the weekend brought several political figures to help celebrate. Former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D’Amato spoke to those gathered. He remarked flippantly about being clairvoyant and seeing into the future – a “great” Hempstead supervisor becoming district attorney and a great senior Hempstead councilman becoming supervisor. Both of those referred to were on hand – Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Tony Santino. Reached for comment on whether he believed these sightings to have been firmly rooted, D’Amato said through a spokeswoman:

“I was having a good time with my speculations! But the rumor has been circulating for some time and everyone knows that Supervisor Murray and Councilman Santino are Chairman [Joseph] Mondello's protégés and he thinks very highly of them.

“Ultimately, this is in the purview of Chairman Mondello and the Republican Party and they will make the final decision."
