The appointment of John Ciampoli as Nassau’s new county attorney was on the agenda to be approved by the County Legislature’s Rules Committee Monday, but Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa) didn't call the item.

When asked why afterwards, Schmitt said he held off at the request of the administration.

Michael Martino, spokesman for new Republican County Executive Edward Mangano, explained that Ciampoli was too busy with a legal dispute over the Assessment Review Commission and settlement hearings to go to the committee meeting.

But rumors immediately began swirling that Ciampoli was having second thoughts about signing onto Mangano’s team.

“There is no truth at all to that,” Martino responded. “John is completely committed to Nassau County. He’s just busy cleaning up the mess that was left behind by the prior administration.”
