Before Al DAmato endorsed Dina De Giorgio, the sophomore GOP councilwoman running for North Hempstead Town supervisor, the former three-term U.S. senator from New York took a moment to criticize national Republicans.

He did not mince words.

I think youve got to be a jackass to be voting against background checks for people, he said, a day after a gun control drive in the Senate was defeated and President Barack Obama declared the day as shameful.

Do you really think that our forefathers would have said that the local kook should walk around and own a weapon? I dont think so, he added.

Explaining the rebuke, he said: Im a Republican, Im not always very proud with the way our party has been doing lately, particularly on the national level.

In her remarks, De Giorgio called DAmato an all-time Long Island rock star.
