Yeah, the deal to hike taxes on wealthy Americans, after all the purple posturing, adds up to thin gruel at best, whether you're a deficit hawk or a deficit dove. It leaves the left in the Democratic Party -- such as it is -- grumbling that Obama ceded too much again to those who wish to shred government aid programs and the right in the GOP still bemoaning the big expense of "entitlements" amid visions of Fiscal Judgment Day.

But at least the 'cliff' cliché loses momentum -- even if it never was more than a dramatic shorthand invention to explain something complicated.
