Nassau County DA and state attorney general candidate Kathleen Rice is stepping aside in the case of David Mejias, the state Senate candidate who was arrested Wednesday on charges stemming from some sort of dispute with his ex-girlfriend. Rice and Mejias are both Democrats.

The Mejias case will be handled by Queens DA Richard Brown, a gravely-voiced former Appellate Division judge who has shown no inclination to seek higher office.

Statement:

“The District Attorney’s office requested that a special prosecutor handle this case due to a personal relationship that exists between the victim, her family and the district attorney. It is this office’s opinion that by appointing a special prosecutor, the office can easily eliminate any chance that there could exist even the mere appearance of impropriety surrounding the future handling of this case."
