In the homestretch of several GOP state Senate primaries, wealthy donors forked over $175,000 to a political-action committee dedicated aiding Republicans who voted for gay marriage.
Hedge fund manager Paul Singer contributed $150,000 to the New York Unity PAC in mid-August. Singer, whose son is gay, has contributed previously to NY Republicans in the wake of the 2011 vote to legalize same-sex marriage.
Former Republican National Committee Chairman Kenneth Mehlman contributed $25,000 to a few days later to the PAC.
State records don’t list any expenditures by the PAC as of Sept. 2. But three of the four Republican senators who cast the deciding votes on marriage are facing tough primaries against GOP foes: Roy McDonald in Saratoga County, Stephen Saland in Dutchess County and Mark Grisanti in Buffalo.
