Rudy Giuliani today announced his support for Rep. Bob Turner for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, arguably the highest-profile endorsement to date in the three-way contest.

Turner is battling Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Manhattan attorney Wendy Long for the GOP nomination in the June 26 primary.

Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, said Turner (R-Rockaway Point) is the only Republican in the race who can unseat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who currently enjoys a huge lead in the polls.

“[Turner] is a proven winner and the only candidate who can defeat the nation's most liberal senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, in November,” Giuliani said. “I urge my fellow Republicans to join me in supporting him.”

Former Giuliani aide Jake Menges has been advising Turner in the campaign.
