Gov. David A. Paterson said today he had written to the federal government in support of recognition for the Shinnecock Indians of Southampton, and was involved in discussions about a potential casino.

"We wrote a letter in support of their recognition by our federal bureaus and certainly there are conversations," he told reporters at a news conference in Manhattan. "There's sort of an understanding that there are certain areas that it would be very difficult to have a casino because of the accessibility. But there are other areas that might actually allow for that and we're having those discussions."

UPDATE: A source close to the tribe's casino efforts confirms that talks have taken place, at least in part with the governor's secretary and counsel.  "We're hoping to sit down with them and see what we can do with them, sooner rather than later," the person said.
