Just for the record, Francis X. Moroney receives part-time pay as leader of the Town of North Hempstead Republican Committee while serving as top deputy to Nassau Comptroller George Maragos, for which he was hired at $167,000 a year in January.
Moroney explained: "I take a $15,000 stipend from the party, which goes back for time immemorial - before me, not anything I started . . . It's a small salary to offset the expenses you have" as leader. More than one dissident pointed out that this payment represents a lion's share of the committee's fundraising.
