Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone held a conference call Thursday with President Barack Obama on post-Sandy relief. Gov Andrew M. Cuomo and New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn were also on the line.
Mangano said the conversation focused on how to bring "a coordinated effort to address and bring relief to citizens" by providing power, gasoline and shelters.
Bellone said he told Obama about the "continued threat to the South Shore" due to the fact that Fire Island "has breached in several spots." Obama spoke about the need for all levels of government "to come together to find long-term sustainable solutions to protect our shorelines," Bellone said.
Mangano said he also asked Obama to extend Daylight Saving time to help residents.
He said the county is focused on a team approach that uses local, state and federal resources "to provide for short term and long term needs."
