Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) has been named chairman of the Senate Commerce, Economic and Small Business Committee.

Senate co-leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre), who made the appointment, said Martins “recognizes the importance of small businesses to our local communities.”

Martins will also continue to serve as chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee. He's held that chairmanship for three years. The Senate shifted around some committee assignments after Charles Fuschillo Jr. of Merrick unexpectedly resigned Dec. 31 to take a job with a nonprofit organization.
