Sen. Craig Johnson’s presumed GOP opponent this year is Mineola Mayor Jack Martins, who declared his candidacy at a rally Sunday in Williston Park, attended by hundreds of supporters. On the bill for the event were US Rep. Peter King , Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, Legis. Richard Nicolello and mayors and trustees of villages and leaders from elsewhere in the county.

Martins on Sunday evening attacked Johnson’s record, charging the Port Washington Democrats’ votes since his election in 2007 show him to be failing to “look out for the 7th Senate District and Long Island.” Martins links Johnson to the policies of New York City Democrats. He stressed taxes and spending that “put pressure on people who are barely making it as it is.” Martins has been in his current elected role for seven years, before which he spent a year as a trustee in Mineola.
