Nassau Community College's full-time faculty union endorsed Tom Suozzi for county executive this week, becoming the first academic union to give the Democrat public support, union leaders said.
"We are confident that Tom Suozzi can, and will, lead this County to a brighter financial future while also placing a value on public sector employees," said Debra DeSanto, president of the Nassau Community College Federation of Teachers Local 3150.
The union is also endorsing Legislator Wayne Wink for Nassau County Comptroller.
The NCCFT represents more than 600 full-time faculty at the Garden City college. The current union contract expires this August.
College trustees are in the middle of a search for a new president to replace former president Donald Astrab, whom trustees removed from the post after 30 months on the job and several clashes with the faculty union. The full-time faculty, who comprise the NCCFT, twice voted no-confidence in Astrab.
