Nassau Legis. Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence) was in Florida when Hurricane Sandy overwhelmed his southwest Nassau 7th District, which includes the Bay Park sewage plant, with sewage and storm water.
Kopel said he and wife were supposed to fly back to New York on Sunday before Sandy surged onshore Monday but his flight was cancelled. He couldn’t get home until the next Sunday.
Although he missed Sandy’s devastation first hand, “I was able to work much more effectively” from his Boynton Beach second home, he said. “I had power. I had telephones...I had my Internet. I was busy all day.”
“I took the first flight they gave us back.”
