Republican Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano continues to hire former employees of Democratic politicians.
His administration recently hired both Ali Mirza and Zefy Christopoulos as $30-an-hour seasonal park workers. Mirza had worked on and off for Democratic Thomas Suozzi when he was county executive. Christopolous was press secretary for Glen Cove Democrat Diane Yatauro, a former presiding officer and then minority leader of the county legislature. After Yatauro decided against running for re-election two years ago, Christopoulos was let go.
Mangano in the past hired former Democratic legislative aides Fran Evans and Gerry Twombly, as well as.Joanne Maglione, who worked under her maiden name of Oweis as a deputy county attorney for Suozzi.
Mirza, who ran twice unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the county legislature, is now actively supporting Adam Haber, who is running a primary against Suozzi for the Democratic nomination to challenge Mangano this fall. Mirza said his private life has nothing to do with his part-time public job. And he said he doesn’t tell Mangano what Haber is up to. “I don’t kiss and tell anything,” Mirza said. “I just want to see change in Nassau County Democratic party leadership. I want to see a fresh face as the future leader the county.”
Christopoulos did not return calls for comment.
