A competition has developed over who will chair the Suffolk Community College board of trustees, according to college sources.

Trustees Ernie Mattace and David Ochoa are expected to vie for the top spot in Thursday’s board meeting. They are looking to succeed current chairman William Moore of Southold, whom the county legislature replaced several weeks ago because his term expires June 30.

Both Mattace and Ochoa ran and lost bids for public office in 2006. Mattace, political director of Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW, which represents retail workers, lost a special election to Assemb. Philip Boyle; Ochoa, a former administrator with Dowling College, now in private business, lost a Democratic primary for state Senate.
