Senator Charles Schumer huddled with state Independence Party chairman Frank MacKay and Oheka Castle owner Gary Melius Tuesday night for dinner, and main course on the menu was a discussion about getting the minor party’s early endorsement, according to sources close to the meal.

The talks come as the names of Daily News Publisher Mort Zuckerman and TV commentator Lawrence Kudlow have surfaced as potential Senate candidates. An early move by the Independence Party, which normally waits until the last minute to act, might deflate some contenders’ aspirations.

Schumer declined comment. MacKay could not say when the minor party might act, but added, “I can’t imaigne myself or the party endorsing anyone but Chuck Schumer.”
