Even a veteran politician like U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer can get his slogans mixed up.

At a news conference Monday in Garden City Park to announce “Cash for Caulkers” — fix-up of older homes to increase energy efficiency — he twice referred to the program as “Cash for Clunkers” — the expired program of rebates for trading in old, gas-guzzling cars.

He caught himself the second time. “Did I say, ‘Cash for Clunkers?’ Strike that!” Schumer said.
