Word of the Obama administration's action to recognize the Shinnecocks made waves in the casino gambling world, as this account shows. Does it mean a settlement involving the Belmont Race Park?

Undoubtedly it will mean some positioning within the state Legislature. Sen. Craig Jonnson, whose district includes the Nassau track, was quoted in the Times today as saying: “The first topic I want to discuss is how Belmont fits into this."

U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) was quoted here as saying: "what it really is to the Shinnecock people, and I agree with this, is a long-sought and I think well-deserved validation of their heritage and their existence as a tribe."

But as Newsday's Bart Jones points out here, the issue is clouded some by a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier this year.
