One of the odder sights at last night's state Conservative Party dinner, honoring former Senator and presidential candidate Fred Thompson: ex-LG Betsy McCaughey seated next to GOP Chairman Ed Cox -- who'd moved to a different seat on the dais* in time to hear gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio. McCaughey was just a few seats over on the dais from ex-Gov. George Pataki, her mentor-then-foe in the 1990's. During his own address Lazio thanked Pataki -- who had gotten up. Lazio gave a spirited speech about how he's the alternative to Andrew Cuomo "caving in to the Democratic majority" in Albany and to special interests. He stumbled over the windup line "Of course we're going to win this race!" but kept the energy level up. There were Steve Levy supporters in the room, too, other than Cox: state executive director Thomas Basile and other GOP state party officials.
