When freshman Brookhaven town board member Kevin LaValle rose at last week’s Republican convention to nominate his cousin, State Sen. Kenneth LaValle, for re-election, he said never fully understood the power of senator’s name until he began campaigning himself.

“There was not a day that went by that I was not called Ken,” he said.

His brother John Jay LaValle, Suffolk Republican chairman,  deadpanned from the prodium: “That’s why you won.”
