Since it's bound to be a long election season, and there will be ample future opportunity, we'll start winding up what's turned into an extended opening exchange between challenger and Mineola Mayor Jack Martins and Sen. Craig Johnson with this tart statement conveyed by Johnson's spokesman Azzopardi:

“ I appreciate that Jack Martins called my statement clever. However, I know that actions speak louder than words.

"While candidate Martins rallies against taxes, the real Jack Martins has consistently raised property taxes as mayor of Mineola.

"Also, Mayor Martins was more than happy to accept $75,000 of what candidate Martins calls “pork” from former Senator Balboni, as well as $200,000 in grants from Senator Johnson.

"The latter funds were to be used to repair the roof of the Mineola Fire Department's headquarters. Senator Johnson was proud to secure this funding in order to help those who volunteer to keep Mineola residents safe.

"He was shocked to find out earlier this month that Martins was more than six months late in filing paperwork that would allow the grant to
be completed. Frankly, those firefighters deserve better, and we are confident that the residents of the 7th Senate District will find the actions of Mayor Martins, and the reality-deprived  rhetoric of candidate Martins equally distasteful .”
