Howard Weitzman's announcement formally revealing his candidacy for comptroller comes in an email blast to supporters and ends with an invite to a March 19 kickoff fundraiser at the Chateau Briand catering hall in Carle Place. The text:
It’s been a long three years since I ended my second term as Nassau County Comptroller.
Like you, I have watched our County descend in freefall towards financial collapse. We have witnessed multiple bond downgrades, a massive year-end deficit, and the near depletion of County reserves. Our assessment system has become more dysfunctional with almost all taxpayers now being forced to challenge their assessments. As a result of the actions taken by the current administration, the County is under the tight financial control of an outside State agency. Without a change in leadership, our future is bleak and perilous.
It is for these reasons that I have decided to run for re-election for Nassau County Comptroller.
During my eight years as Comptroller, I was proud to play a major role in the financial rescue of our County. As the only CPA ever elected Nassau Comptroller, my office became a national model for transparency and accountability while at the same time developing a reputation for hard work, independence and integrity.
My hard hitting audits exposed millions of dollars in fraud, waste and abuse, sometimes in places never before touched such as the County’s numerous special taxing districts. We were able to develop and sponsor bi-partisan legislation that saved County taxpayers tens of million dollars by ending duplicate healthcare benefits to County workers and tightening up the requirements for lifetime benefits. Our office forced the State Insurance Plan to rescind a $250 million rate increase, saving Long Island taxpayers over $100 million, and the prescription discount program we developed saved County taxpayers millions of dollars annually while becoming a national model.
I am running for office again to help reverse the County’s financial decline. I will restore the significant role of the Comptroller’s office exemplified by my eight years in office. As you are well aware, political campaigns are expensive to run. That is why I am asking for your help and support to enable me to once again rebuild a Nassau County we can all be proud of.
