Jay Townsend, going into a primary against Gary Berntsen for a shot at the general election ballot against Sen. Charles Schumer, said he will be arguing to rank-and-file GOP voters that his endorsement by the Conservative Party makes him the stronger candidate.

“I shouldn’t be faulted for doing what a statewide candidate does to run a statewide campaign,” he said. While focused on the C line, however, he wasn’t able to focus on courting tea-party patriots.

The 55-year-old Orange County resident said, “Now we get to go the grass roots…I got what I need to get today.”
