ALBANY - According to the Albany Times-Union, this is the e-mail Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy sent to Republican leaders on Tuesday, pitching his candidacy:

By now I am sure you have received an e-mail from Rick Lazio saying that he cannot believe that some Republican leaders would be considering my potential candidacy for Governor.

Rick said it was a small group. What he did not say was that it was the nine Vice Chairs of the party – seven of whom expressed interest in supporting me. Why should that be surprising? I was endorsed by both the Republican and Conservative Parties in my last election.

The reason I am respectfully seeking your endorsement is because I have the very message I believe you are longing to see a gubernatorial candidate embrace and promote. No other candidate in this race can match my record as a fiscal conservative.

I inherited a huge budget deficit and turned it around into a surplus and a general fund tax cut. I crafted six budgets, all with either a general fund tax cut or freeze. While New York State was increasing spending by 70% last decade, I cut spending in three of my last six years.

No other candidate has taken on unions and extracted 36 million dollars in concessions. No other candidate has stood up against illegal immigration as I have. No other candidate has put forth the detailed contract for New York as I have that can save this state from bankruptcy.

What good is winning if we do not elect someone who has the proven record, and the passion to take on the unions, special interests and the entrenched establishment that has made New York one of the most dysfunctional, and embarrassing governments in the nation?

If you want someone who can actually win this race and radically restructure this state government once in office, I ask that you consider my potential candidacy. Thank you for the courtesy that you have extended to me over these last few weeks.

Sincerely,

Steve Levy
