Four people, including a man who hit numerous highway markers and signs after his vehicle drove off the Long Island Expressway near the Exit 72 offramp, were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, Riverhead police said Sunday.

The arrests were part of a Stop-DWI enforcement effort by Riverhead police that will continue through the rest of the 4th of July weekend and summer and into the end-of-the-year holiday season, police said.

The four face DWI charges after their arrests between late Saturday night and early Sunday at either checkpoints or as a result of stepped up patrols by Riverhead police officers, officials said.

The defendants were identified by Riverhead police as Juan also allegedly involved in the LIE crash, Gambino Ruiz Coz, 47, of Priscilla Avenue, Riverhead; Jorge Garcia Aguilar, 31, of Segal Avenue, also in Riverhead; and Leopoldo Ferrufino , 50, of Old Quogue, Flanders.
