Kerry Washington/Olivia Pope fashion hits windows at Saks Fifth Avenue
In a most clever collaboration, Saks Fifth Avenue has partnered with the hit ABC series, “Scandal,” starring Kerry Washington, who notably was voted the best-dressed woman in the world recently by People magazine.
The multi-platform promotion kicked off on Wednesday night, a day before the new season premiered, at a star-studded event that included the show’s cast and was sponsored by Mercedes-Benz (the new 2014 CLA250 is used in the show).
The NYC flagship store features a window curated by Washington and the show’s Emmy Award-winning costume designer Lyn Paolo. The clothes are knockouts and yes, there is a Mercedes in the window. The duo has worked closely to perfect the wardrobe of Olivia Pope, Washington’s savvy, confident and gorgeously dressed Washington, D.C. crisis fixer. Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera are among the character’s go-to brands. And … the mannequins look a heck of a lot like Washington.
"I think what I'm most proud of is that, for us, the fashion on the show isn't just fashion for fashion's sake,” Washington told WABC-News. “It's really about the performance of identity through clothes and how these characters express who they are through fashion.”
“Fashion is such an integral part of the show and for Kerry and I to have had the opportunity to play a part in the creation of the iconic Saks windows is a dream come true. Saks and 'Scandal' … brilliant,” said Paolo in a statement.
There are other looks that represent cast members know as modern day “Gladiators” displayed in the window as well.
As for Washington's personal style, she is known as a fashion risk-taker off the set and recently sported a hot-of-the-runway Marchesa confection at the Emmys. For her appearance at the Saks event, she wore an ankle length, checked Prada frock that featured a ruffled front.
The display, which is up until Sunday, Oct. 6, will definitely get people asking the all-important question . . . how much is that knockout Olivia Pope ensemble in the window? (We’re guessing a lot.)
