Audit: Suffolk paid employees to sleep on the job
A new audit has found that Suffolk County overpaid an operator of homeless shelters $221,517, including $83,000 for paying employees to literally sleep on the job.
The shelter operator acknowledged workers were allowed sleep during overnight hours, but were paid a reduced flat $30 rate and still provided supervision that was less expensive than putting on a shift at full pay.
