A Babylon man was arrested and charged with the robbery of three tanning salons at gunpoint within an eight-day period, Suffolk police said.

Robert Gioia Jr., 29, of 382 Camden Ave., charged with three counts of first-degree robbery, was arraigned Friday in First District Court, Central Islip, and ordered held on $300,000 bond or $150,000 cash bail.

Det. Sgt. John Kempf said all three salons are located in the First Precinct, but it is unclear why salons were targeted.

"We don't know the reason," Kempf said. "Maybe he thought they were easy targets."

No one was injured during the robberies, in which a total of less than $1,000 was taken, Kempf said.

Gioia is charged with robbing the Rockstar Tans, 288 N. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst on May 21; the European Image Tanning Center, 749 Sunrise Hwy., West Babylon on Tuesday; and the Perfect Color Tanning Salon, 656 Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, that same day.
