Police are investigating a ride-on mower accident Monday in Montauk that left the operator critically injured.

Baldomero Villa Vicenzio, 36, of Riverhead, was "listed in critical but stable condition" Tuesday at Stony Brook University Hospital after the accident, East Hampton Town police said in a news release.

Villa Vicenzio, who works for Warren's Nursery in Water Mill, was operating the mower at a private residence on South Ferncroft Place at 11:30 a.m. Monday when "the mower overturned on an embankment" and pinned him, causing serious injuries, police said.

Passing motorists freed Villa Vicenzio before emergency responders arrived, police said.

Police and Emergency Medical Service personnel found Villa Vicenzio unresponsive and revived him at the scene before he was airlifted to the hospital, police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to call East Hampton police at 631-537-7575.
