Cops: Bellport man drove drunk with child in car

Juan Campos was arrested and charged with Aggravated

Juan Campos was arrested and charged with Aggravated DWI with a Child 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra's Law), Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

A Bellport man was arrested and charged under Leandra's Law on Sunday afternoon for driving while under the influence of alcohol with an 11-year-old child in the car, police said.

Juan Campos, 32, of 622 Doane Avenue, was pulled over in a 1991 Dodge Stealth around 4:10 p.m. for "failing to maintain his lane" while heading westbound on Sunrise Highway near exit 52 in Holbrook, Suffolk County police said.

The 11-year-old is not related to Campos, but the son of a 28-year-old unnamed female who was also in the vehicle, police said.

After an interview with police, "it was determined Campos was under the influence of alcohol," police said.

Campos was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child under 15-years-old, driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. Police also issued Campos three citations for vehicle and traffic law violations.

Leandra's Law is named after Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old girl who was killed on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan in October 2009 while she rode in a car with the intoxicated mother of one of her friends. The law, enacted a month after the crash, makes driving drunk with anyone age 15 or younger in the vehicle a felony, even on the first offense.

Campos, who is being held overnight at the Fifth Precinct in Patchogue, is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
