A male driver was killed and his passenger seriously injured Saturday night when the car they were riding in crashed into two homes in North Amityville, Suffolk County police said.

The Pontiac sedan was traveling south on Great Neck Road shortly after 8:30 p.m. when it veered off the road, struck the corner of a house and then hit the outside of a home next door, police said.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and removed the car's roof to extricate at least one of the occupants.

Both homes were damaged, but no one inside was hurt, police said.

The passenger, a male, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Police did not immediately release the names of the driver and passenger.
