Cops: Driver airlifted after E. Islip crash

The driver of a Volkswagen involved in a crash Wednesday morning in East Islip was airlifted to a hospital, police said.

The driver was not identified by Suffolk County police. But police said reports received at 9:18 a.m. indicated the driver was not seriously injured. The driver had been airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries initially believed to be serious.

Police said the crash occurred at 8:23 a.m. near the intersection of Carleton Avenue and Union Boulevard.

A witness said the crash involved a Volkswagen Beetle and a service van. The driver of the van was not believed to have been injured, police said.

The crash caused the closure of Union Boulevard in both directions between Carleton and Third avenues. Carleton also was closed between Montauk Highway and Union.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
