Six children and a pregnant woman were taken to the hospital after an alleged drunken driver struck a school bus, fled the scene, and then crashed into another car Friday afternoon in Brentwood, police said.

Kyle Norton, 37, of East Islip hit the rear of a school bus on Broadway at Dolce Street about 3:34 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

"Four children on the bus went to the hospital for precautionary reasons," police said in a statement.

Norton, driving a 2006 Chevy TrailBlazer, then fled and crashed into a 2004 Mercury, which was being driven by the pregnant woman who had her two children in the car, at Alkier Street and Gibson Avenue at 3:36 p.m.

The family was also taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said. All six children and the pregnant woman were treated for minor injuries and released. Norton was not injured.

Norton, of 47 Wildwood Ct., was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Suffolk police are conducting a safety check on the school bus.

Police said two witnesses followed Norton after the first crash and called police.

Norton is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
