Cops: Driver who fled crash scene arrested

A driver who fled the scene of a serious auto accident earlier this month in West Islip, leaving behind two wounded female passengers, was arrested late Monday, police said.

Suffolk County police identified that driver as Joseph Gervasio, 24, of 181 West Lake Dr. Gervasio was arraigned Tuesday on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. His bail was set at $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

"He looks forward to his day in court," said George Duncan, his defense attorney in Central Islip.

The accident occurred at 2:08 a.m. June 15 when, police said, Gervasio lost control of his 2008 Acura, crashing into a utility pole on Union Boulevard just west of Higbie Lane. Police said Gervasio then fled the scene, leaving behind two female passengers -- at least one of them seriously injured.

The two women -- one in the front seat, one in the backseat of the car -- were taken to nearby Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center.

Police could not immediately provide an update of either woman's recovery on Tuesday, but said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

When Gervasio found out he was wanted by police, Duncan said, he turned himself in Monday night at the Third Precinct in Bay Shore.
