Cops: DWI driver hurts self, passenger in crash

A seriously injured driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash that also injured a passenger in his sport utility vehicle early Tuesday evening on Route 109 in West Babylon, Suffolk County police said.

The passenger, a 40-year-old man, suffered what police described as minor injuries.

Police said driver Stephen Kokser, 49, of Michigan Avenue, Bay Shore, suffered "a serious injury to his arm," which was pinned under the vehicle, a 2006 Nissan Xterra, during the crash about 8:30 p.m. on the southbound ramp of Route 109 from westbound Sunrise Highway.

Kokser was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was arrested and charged with DWI. Police said he is in stable condition.

The passenger, identified as Christopher Santiago, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Police said the Xterra was impounded for a safety check.
